John Locke s Life, Liberty, And Property - 794 Words
Megan Conen History 206.05 Professor Moore Feb 2, 2015 Many people travel to the ââ¬Å"free landâ⬠because of the so-called American dream, which promised prosperity and an affordable living. Everyone wanted John Lockeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Life, Liberty, and Propertyâ⬠. For some, like the white population, it came easy. For others, like immigrants and Black Americans it was a constant struggle. Laws put in place and rigged elections, to take away any power and say in the government. Many murdered because they were the scapegoats to all crime and murdered due to a bizarre racial hatred or simply for sport. Therefore, when Black Americans are stripped of Liberty and have their Life taken from them, Property is one of the only things they can control and protect. Coming from being someoneââ¬â¢s property to actually owning it, is a sign of progress and class. It is a reason to be proud and feel accomplished. Housing was important during the segregation and migration period because, it represented wealth and living on a more equal pl aying field with the white population. Housing segregation in the United States established slowly. In fact, prior to 1900, black Americans were scattered widely throughout white neighborhoods. In south, black laborers and servants lived side by side with their white employers. In north, blacks were more likely to share a neighborhood with whites than to live in racially segregated communities (). Although discrimination continued after the Civil War, blacks typically integratedShow MoreRelatedJohn Locke s Views On Life, Liberty, And Property1935 Words à |à 8 PagesTo protect life, liberty, and property are the main objectives of the government; we as humans have an obligation to government and its rules the moment we are born, without even knowing so, in order to have such objectives owed unto us. This is an important clause for humans in reason because without protection of any rights, society would regress back to a state of nature that was man versus man, and that would not be a sound state for anyone at any point in time. Media Ethics and behavior Free Essays
With the most resent massacre at Virginia Tech the issue of media ethics has once again been brought into question. à This, I believe, is because of the need to understanding why or how this could happen.à Perhaps this understanding could prevent another violent incident from happening to our children and to our society and allow a certain type of closure in our grief. We will write a custom essay sample on Media Ethics and behavior or any similar topic only for you Order Now In researching the topic of journalistic ethics and its effects on behavior, I found three distinct concerns that related to the Virginia Tech massacre the first; does the media influence or encourage behavior? And if so, what steps is the media taking to understand this issue?à Is the media industry trying to create a plan to regulate how incidents of this nature are portrayed, or how they will be reported and in what context? à The second is on the issue of gun control; are United States laws on gun ownership not strict enough?à Do we need to get tougher?à Should we create more laws? And third is American society failing when dealing with mental health issues?à Is there enough studies being done or funding for mental health issues?à It should also be noted that in all the information on violent behavior everyone agrees that there is not one single indicator that will predict human behavior and that all avenues must be explored to fully understand human behavior which is very complex. In the United States children and young adults are among the highest at risk for experiencing violent crimes and violence.à We can also claim that a large portion of our time is spent interacting in the world of media.à Some forms of media used by American adolescents have been found to be very violent and this is where the question of mediaââ¬â¢s effect on behavior comes in.à Shortly after the Virginia Tech incident a USA Today article told of a popular game called ââ¬Å"Assassinâ⬠. This game is played on both college and high school campuses across America.à Police officers have been urging students, ââ¬Å"to halt the games, which involve ambushing other players with sometimes realistic looking toy gun or other objects, after the Virginia Tech shooting last week that left 33 people deadâ⬠.à The local authorities did this as a preventive measurement for the safety of the kids playing as well as others by mistaken intent (Welch). Serious crime by adolescents rose greatly in the late 1980s, and peaked in 1994. Since then juvenile crime has declined even faster than overall crime, and violent offenses by juveniles have fallen back to 1980s levels. In 2000, juveniles accounted for 17 percent of all violent crime arrests and 32 percent of all property crime arrests.à According to federal statistics juveniles account for only 9 percent of those arrested for murder, but make up one-quarter of all robbery arrests and 53 percent of all arson arrests. Since the number of Americans under the age of 18 is projected to increase, some juvenile justice experts argue the juvenile crime rate may increase as well (Public Agenda.org). But regardless of how the media reports on school killings, society needs to develop better ways of helping their children when viewing or in some cases experiencing violence.à Teaching individuals at a young age that violence in any form is not tolerated and work at understanding why young individuals see violence as a method for solving problems. The Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Student Press joined together to discuss how school violence is to be covered.à The discussion was to try to see how to balance reporting the news with minimizing harm to students across the country.à If shooters get their ââ¬Å"fifteen minutes of fameâ⬠, especially is they are dubbed as the heroic outlaw, then this opens the possible problems of increasingly more disenfranchised ââ¬Å"nobodiesâ⬠who may view violence as a way to become noticed. Reporters pressured to get the story and make it central on the nightly news may not be sensitive to the effects of their coverage in the larger scheme of things (Fitzgerald and Mitchell).à Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the important to justice and the foundation of democracy. The organization also believes that the duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. They believe that all journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. They go on to say that professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalistââ¬â¢s credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Societyââ¬â¢s principles and standards of practice (www.spj.org). This organization, Society for Professional Journalism, believes that ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect. Journalists should show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.à They must be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy and recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance. Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyoneââ¬â¢s privacy. Journalist must show good taste, avoid pandering to lurid curiosity, be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes, be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges and balance a criminal suspectââ¬â¢s fair trial rights with the publicââ¬â¢s right to be informed. Journalists should also ââ¬Å"avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility, refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.à Journalist should disclose unavoidable conflicts, be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable, deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage and be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for newsâ⬠(www.spj.org). The meeting produced many ideals to help reporters and the public when dealing with violence and kids. As juvenile crime increased in the 1990s, nearly every state passed laws making it easier to prosecute juveniles in adult courts for serious offenses. Supporters say many juveniles are hardened criminals despite their youth, and maybe itââ¬â¢s not appropriate to handle serious crimes like murder and rape in the juvenile justice system. Critics say juveniles tried as adults will not get any of the counseling and rehabilitation services that might prevent them from committing more crimes. In surveys, most Americans endorse trying some juveniles as adults, but they also believe rehabilitation programs can be effective. Student journalists hope to educate the professionals about how to deal with people their age and how to be more aware of their concerns.à In turn, the professionals can guide students in how best to cover stories. The theory is that student journalists can get kids to talk without pressuring them or invading their privacy the way many journalists from out of town have done.à Yet working together with the professionals can help them through the process and through the trauma.à It may also be the case that student journalists can get through to other students in ways that adults canââ¬â¢t, because students will more willing to read something about violence written by another student. ââ¬Å"We want to read it from the point of view of someone who knows what weââ¬â¢re experiencing,â⬠said one student. Professional reporters come in, get the story, and leave, kids at a school where violence has occurred can continue to cover the story in a long-range manner, and with more breadth and depth.à ââ¬Å"Kids know there is more depth,â⬠said Laura Schaub, of the Oklahoma Inter-Scholastic Press Association, ââ¬Å"but they can use professional assistance conceptualizing how to get it into the paperâ⬠(www.spj.org). In more resent weeks NBC news has been under fire for the way it handled the pictures and writings of the student who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech.à NBC announced that it would limit its use of images to ââ¬Å"no more than 10 percent of airtimeâ⬠.à Steve Capus, the president of NBC News, strongly defended the networkââ¬â¢s decision to broadcast the material.à Families of some of the victims, some law enforcement officials and executives from competing television news organizations have accused NBC of being insensitive or exploitative in the way it presented the materials on the air. (Carter). In a study from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control I found that there were 173 incidents between July 1, 1994 and June 30, 1998. The majorities of these incidents were homicides involving the use of firearms. The total number of incidents did decrease steadily since the 1992-1993 school year. But the total number of multiple victim events appears to have increased. During August 1995 through June 1998, there were an average of five multiple victims events per year. This is compared to an average of one multiple victim event per year in the three years from August 1992 through July 1995. While the total number of events of school associated violent deaths have decreased, the total number of multiple-victim events appears to have increased (2007). In a study by the Center for Disease Control named Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a school-based survey designed to produce a nationally representative sample of risk behaviors among students in grades 9-12. This study was completed in 1997 and reported that 18.3% of high school students carried a weapons weather it was a gun, knife, or club during the 30 days preceding the survey, down from 26.1% in 1991. The survey also found that 5.9% of high school students carried a gun during the 30 days preceding the survey, 8.5% of high school students carried a weapon on school property during the 30 days preceding the survey and that 7.4% of high school students were threatened or injured with a weapon on school property during the 12 months preceding the survey. Nationwide, 4% of students had missed 1 or more days of school during the 30 days preceding the survey because they had felt unsafe at school or when traveling to or from school. The prevalence of weapon carrying on school property on 1 or more of the 30 days preceding the survey was 8.5% nationwide. Overall, male students (12.5%) were significantly more likely than female students (3.7%) to have carried a weapon on school property (www.cdc.gov). Research has demonstrated that exposure to both real life and media violence is associated with increased hostility and aggressive behavior and decreased empathy. However, not all adolescents will be affected by violence exposure in the same way. Those who are exposed to personal and community violence, or who have a predisposition to aggressive behavior, may be more at risk for the negative effects of violence exposure. The study explored the effects of real life and media violence exposure on two populations, 216 high school students (109 girls) and 96 adolescents (13 girls) detained in a juvenile detention center. Participants completed seven self-report instruments measuring exposure to real life and media violence, psychopathology, hostile attributions, aggression, empathy, and social desirability. Due to the differences in the samples, results were analyzed separately (Greene). Consistent with the hypotheses and the General Aggression Model, real life and media violence exposure was significantly associated with and significantly predicted increased aggression, increased hostile attributions, and decreased empathy for the high school student sample. Additionally, psychopathology was a significant mediating variable for the relationship between real life violence and aggression. For the detained adolescents, exposure to real life violence was positively associated with aggression and psychopathology, but was not significantly associated with hostile attributions or empathy. Media violence was not associated with aggression, hostile attributions, or empathy. But these results were not consistent with the hypotheses and may reflect desensitization processes or differences in aggressive practices among this high risk sample. Results of this study suggest the need for further work in the areas of prevention and interventions for violence-exposed adolescents in order to reduce negative outcomes. Additionally, future research may wish to focus more attention on high risk individuals to better understand the process through which these adolescents react to violence exposure (Anderson, Berkowitz, Donnerstein, Huesmann, Johnson, Linz, Malamouth and Wartella). Gun control is also part of this discussion.à This was the first topic brought out when the incident at Virginia Tech. was first reported.à The world news made this the center for attention.à Media placed blame for the cause in America on the topic of gun control and placed mediaââ¬â¢s involvement on the back burner.à New York mayor, Michael Bloomber stated to Newsweek, ââ¬Å"the conversation about guns needs to move beyond the extremes of Second Amendment purity and liberal utopianism. Much of the rest of the world manages to control gun violence better than we do; this is one case where American exceptionalism is nothing to be proud ofâ⬠(May 4, 2007).à But we shouldnââ¬â¢t forget that blame first should be put on the young man who actually did the killings and secondary blame can then be divided up equally between all other factors involved. General Public in America believes that for the most part other preventive measures are better than owning or carrying a gun.à On the web site Public agenda they conducted a survey on the general population and found that only about 21% believe that guns are useful in preventing crimes.à Most Americans say that tougher laws and punishment would be a better deterrent for crime.à They also found that a majority of Americans feel that school violence is not a serious problem in their schools and in general they feel safe.à They all admit that their community could still be susceptible to an incident like at Virginia Tech. (www.publicagenda.org). Another point the media and the public brought out was the responsibility of helping individuals with possible mental health issues that might have caused someone like Cho Seung-Hui, the killer from Virginia Tech., to behave or react as he did.à In an article in Newsweek dated April 30th, 2007 they looked into the failure of the system and the general population as to seeing the signs, ââ¬Å"Cho had apparently dropped through the cracks of the university bureaucracy. Earlier run-ins werenââ¬â¢t in his recordsâ⬠(31). We need to encourage students who hear one of their friends make a threat to take it seriously, even if they donââ¬â¢t believe that person would ever really so it. Look at the problem of bullying by peers in schools is another even though it may never be stopped, but listening to kids that are experiencing the bullying along with the kids bullying might help.à In doing this research I found that media isnââ¬â¢t the only factor in possibly making what has been happening in America worse. But to me it is clear there was an influence.à In an article written by Evan Thomas he did write about Cho Seung-Huiââ¬â¢s video and said he, ââ¬Å"pays homage to ââ¬Å"Eric and Dylanâ⬠the two videogame-addled teenagers who killed 13 students at Columbine High School in 1999â⬠(24).à In my opinion this does show a connection between violence and the media.à The Media industry really should acknowledge this fact instead of avoiding or defending their style of reporting.à Conscious efforts and discussion is vital in order to stop a growing trend in America when it comes to crime and violence. Catcher in the Rye Judgment Paper free essay sample
Judging someone based on appearance or a first impression usually isnââ¬â¢t an accurate depiction of the personââ¬â¢s true personality. But to Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, first impressions are concrete in his mind. Because he is so judgmental, he doesnââ¬â¢t have any friends and eventually goes insane seeing as human nature is to communicate and interact and he doesnââ¬â¢t have anyone to interact with. J. D. Salinger argued in the catcher in the rye that being judgmental isnââ¬â¢t beneficial to ones well-being or success in life and this is seen as Holden Caulfield judges everyone and pushed most away when in reality he longed for anyone to be close with. In the novel, Holden got kicked out of Pencey Prep for failing four of five classes. On his way out, he decides to pay Mr. Spencer, his history teacher, a visit. They sit down and Mr. Spencer begins to lecture Holden about his effort in school and his future, but Holden refuses to listen to Mr. Spencer criticize his life. Holden abruptly left Mr. Spencerââ¬â¢s house because he viewed Mr. Spencer only as a man trying to criticize him, and not a man trying to help him. ââ¬Å"You will,ââ¬â¢ Old Spencer said. ââ¬ËYou will, boy. You will when itââ¬â¢s too late. ââ¬â¢ I didnââ¬â¢t like hearing him say that. It made me sound dead or somethingâ⬠(14) When Mr. Spencer says this to Holden, he is saying how itââ¬â¢ll be too late when Holden finally wakes up to reality. Holden strongly dislikes this and thatââ¬â¢s the reason he left. That is one of the first instances of Holden judging and pushing away those around him. He then returns to his dormitory and his neighbor, Ackley, stops by. Ackley is described as a pimply nerd and that is the first impression of Ackley, solely his physical description. Holden focuses on his pimples, and his nail-clipping, and his mannerisms to portray Ackley as a disgusting human instead of focusing on who he is as a person. Because Holden is the narrator, his view of Ackley is easily seen as shallow and it makes Ackley look like an unsympathetic character. Holden also had a roommate at Pencey Prep, Stradlater. He was jealous of Stradlaterââ¬â¢s sexual experience although he never directly says so. Holden judges Stradlater, calling him a ââ¬Å"secret slob because of his disgusting mannerisms. Holden could be closer with Stradlater and they could be good friends, but Holden is too busy focusing on the negativity of Stradlater and his jealousy for Stradlaterââ¬â¢s positive qualities. Holden judges Stradlater and Ackley based on their mannerisms and appearances and they are some of the people closest to him. Holden calls Stradlater a ââ¬Å"secret slobâ⬠and says ââ¬Å"The reason he fixed himself up to look good was because he was madly in love with himself. He thought he was the handsomest guy in the Western Hemisphereâ⬠(29). Around him, Holden sees only phonies and hypocrites, however one could call Holden a hypocrite and phony as well. Holdenââ¬â¢s red hunting hat is a symbol of him not caring what anyone else thinks about him, but he chooses only to wear it in the safety of his own room. This contradicts the idea that he doesnââ¬â¢t care at all what people think. Holden shouldnââ¬â¢t be judging Stradlater or Ackley based on their appearances because he too cares about his own appearance which makes Holden a phony as well. In the middle chapters, Holden misses Phoebe, his sister, and Jane, a girl he had intimate feelings for, and even D. B. , his brother. This is different from before because now the reader can see Holdenââ¬â¢s need for company and not only Holdenââ¬â¢s judgmental attitude and him pushing everyone away. Holden also accepts an offer for a prostitute to be sent to his room from an elevator clerk. When she arrives, Holdenââ¬â¢s childhood innocence and fear of adulthood are seen as he tells the prostitute that he just had surgery and canââ¬â¢t have sex, despite this being a lie. Holdenââ¬â¢s sexual needs put him into situations such as this one and after being punched by Maurice, he regrets it. After Maurice left and he got up from the punch, he said ââ¬Å"What I really felt like, though, was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the windowâ⬠(104). That only sets him further back and now he is lonelier than ever. This encounter with Maurice concretizes his view of the world as cruel and cold. Later in the book, he goes on a date with Sally Hayes. They go to a theatre show, and then ice skating but he realizes she only wanted to do this so she could show off her butt in public and this irritates Holden. Finally Holden tries to connect with her in his desperate plea for love, but she shoots down his plans to run away. He says she is a ââ¬Å"royal pain in the assâ⬠, and leaves. This encounter causes Holden to withdraw further into himself and detach even more from society. He is losing faith in his ability to connect with someone or find love after Sally Hayes. Because he was so judgmental of everyone, he never addressed how to interact with others. Now, when he needs company, he canââ¬â¢t have any because he drives everyone away with his immature behaviors. After the date, Holden calls up Carl Luce whom he used to know from an old prep school. They meet for drinks and Holdenââ¬â¢s curiosity takes over when he starts asking questions about sex. Carl becomes uncomfortable with answering the questions and leaves, suggesting that Holden get mental help. Holden is now really lonely because he had yet another honest attempt to connect with anyone and he was shot down. Holden tries to pass off Carl as a phony, but he canââ¬â¢t shake his thoughts. Throughout ââ¬Å"The Catcher in the Ryeâ⬠, Holden Caulfield further and further distances himself from society. This is because he is judgmental of everyone else and sees the world as a place full of hypocrisy and phonies. However, that makes Holden a phony as well because he would fit under his own description of a phony. Through his depiction of Holden, Salinger can comment on the consequences of being a judgmental person and distancing oneself from others. Holden did so and ended up insane in a mental care facility. However, had Holden put on a facade of kindness and care and kept his friends, would he have still ended up in the mental hospital?

Taking Deep Breaths free essay sample
I take deep breaths trying to tame my wildly beating heart. My eyes tear up. I lock myself in my bathroom until its safe to come out, until my younger brother calmed down.I desperately called my mom on her cellphone, but she was driving her afternoon bus route and couldnââ¬â¢t answer. I sat with my back against the door for almost two hours. Quietly, I cracked my bathroom door and peeked out. My brother had settled down, or at least given up on trying to hurt me. Adrenaline coursed through my body, leaving me sweaty, cold at the same time. I tip-toed out of the bathroom and made dashed to my room. Seeing the discarded kitchen knife on the living room floor, I panicked and ran faster. I locked myself in my room and broke down. My younger brother was only eight at the time.I couldnt understand what would make him so angry. My mother rushed home and took my brother to a crisis center. It was there they recommended he to go to a hospital that could better facilitate autism. My mother and I were shocked that my brother had autism. When the hospital admitted him, they disclosed he had a mild form of autism called Asperger Syndrome. We had always assumed he was doing things purposefully, acting out and so on. This strange new name threw my mother and me into a whirlwind. We searched for answers. What caused it? How can we cure it? Each time we were met with disappointment. My brother would be on medication for the rest of his life.I didnââ¬â¢t understand autism at the time; I was only 12 years old. As I have gotten older, I better understand his challenges, his moods and his limitations.Five years later, my brother has made leaps and bounds. Heââ¬â¢s no longer violent and angry all the time, but he still has limits. Since its just my brother, my mom and me at home, I help pick up the slack. I help my brother with homework, cook us both dinners multiple times a week, help with chores, all while maintaining my own schedule as a college-bound student. All of this has left little time for a social life, and in my early teens, I used to resent that. As Iââ¬â¢ve gotten older, I have lost that resentment. Having a younger brother with special needs has given me a unique outlook that my peers lack. Their ignorance to people with special needs is appalling and demeaning. Ive heard special needs students called stupid, worthless and even worse. Through the hardships, I have a better understanding of patience and compassion.Growing up this way has affected my family dynamic a lot. As my brother and I get older, we both grow and take on new challenges. For me, this means going away to college on my own, even though Im very emotionally dependent on my family. I know starting over will be intimidating, but Im motivated and hard working and I plan to do everything I can to make my college education mean the most it can. Ill be the first person in my family to go to a four-year university. The only thing Iââ¬â¢m not worried about is the people Iââ¬â¢ll meet. Since Iââ¬â¢ve seen my brother get taunted and teased Iââ¬â¢m more accepting of all different types of people. With this pressure added on combined with my family who supports me, I know Ill be able to secure all of our dreams.

Emerging Market MNC Analysis Essays
Emerging Market MNC Analysis Essays Emerging Market MNC Analysis Paper Emerging Market MNC Analysis Paper Some of these firms were very successful and some had to withdraw back to their country of origin. In OTOH scenarios, those companies adopted to different business models, strategies analyze two different Macs, TCL and Acre, which fall in the category of electronic firms from emerging markets, in order to come out with a better understanding of their globalize process. TCL Overview TCL is one of the largest consumer electronics NC in the world. It was founded by Mr.. Lie Donnishness, the Current CEO, in 1981 in China. The company produces a wide diverse of electronic products such as TV, mobile phone and Internet access devices; in addition, it is one of the leading companies and was ranked sixth in the global TV arrest in terms of market share (TCL Annual Report, 2011), which is the main business for TCL. See figure 2. The company has a worldwide presence; it has more than 40 sales offices, 18 R centers, and 20 manufacturing bases (TCL Introduction, 2011). Many critics attribute the companys success to focusing on innovation as well as quality; as a result, TCL suppressed many leading companies such as Samsung and Sony. Acre Overview Originally known as Multitude, the Taiwanese company was founded by Stan Shih in 1976, which grew to become the fourth largest PC producer in the world and has a worldwide presence (Acre Overview, 2013). Moreover, Acre considered being one of the largest original equipment manufacturer (MEMO). The company was able to achieve this by having one of the most distinguish integrated operations, between parent company in Taiwan and subsidiaries, as well as between one subsidiary and another. Remarkably, in its globalize process, Acre took more flexible approach which differs from the control based American, European or Japanese models. Acre has a long term mission which is breaking barriers between people and technology (Acre Brands, 2013). Also, the company targets many different customer segments by having multi-brand strategy; it has 4 different brands which are: Acre, Gateway, machines, and Packard Bell (Acre Brands, 2013). 2 Market Presence (Question 1) TCL Market Presence TCL has a worldwide presence in terms of sales, manufacturing and operations. The company was able to have a big presence in all six continents through Joint venture and acquisitions (Donnishness, Lie, 2011). It distributes its products through more than 40 sales offices and agencies worldwide. Moreover, the company has 18 R centers in China, USA, France, Germany and Singapore. The company also owns 20 manufacturing bases globally, in China, Poland, Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam. (Donnishness, Lie, 2011). See figure 3. The geographic growing patterns will be discussed in the following topic. Acre Market Presence Acre also has a worldwide presence in terms of sales, manufacturing and operations. Through its acquisitions, Greenfield investments, and multi-brand strategy, Acre was able to penetrate in all six continents and excel. It has four regional business units (Rabbis) in US, Europe, Singapore, and Taiwan. The main functions of those business units to sell, market and provide after sale services. Each one of those units has branches in many countries. See figure 5. 3 Patterns of Growing (Question 2) TCL Growing We can divide the company growth into four main phases. First phase (1981-1997), order to expand its business in the PRE market (Sandra Bell, 2010). Second Phase(1998-1999), expanding to neighboring country, which was having a Joint venture with Taiwan C.V. base, TCL-C.V. Computer Co. Was established (CAB, 1998). Third phase (2000-2004), expanding to the developed countries mainly in Europe; TCL had many international investment such as acquiring Schneider Electronics GAG in Germany (TCL Annual Report, 2002), a JP with Locate (Murals, D. , 2011), and a JP with Thomson (Elaine Quarterback, 2009), in this phase TCL focused on loss companies, hopefully they can turnaround those losses. However, almost all investments faced huge losses due to several reasons such as management style and the misjudged of its power to turnaround a loss company (Sandra Bell, 2010). Fourth phase (2005- present), in this phase TCL acquired partners shares in Jobs; for instance, TCL acquired Locate shares in the JP (Helen Yuan, 2005), as well as, Thomson shares in the JP (Sandra Bell, 2010). Further, they focused on building a global brand name through partnering with key distributes such KEA and Carefree. See figure 6. Acre Growing For Acre we can divide the company growth into four main phases. First phase (1976-1977), which includes the establishment of the company, and start selling to the local market (Milestones Innovations, 2013). Second phase (1978-1984), in the beginning of this phase the company started to target small neighboring markets such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Later on, it expanded its exporting to reach the US and some parts of Europe. This phase was remarkable in Acres life and considered to be the take-off (The Wall Street, 2007). Third phase (1985-2000), in this phase Acre started to invest worldwide (Milestones Innovations, 2013), they made a lot of acquisitions, Joint ventures, and green field investments such as the acquisition of Altos Computers Systems, a JP with Computed from Mexico to form Acre Computed Latin America (UCLA), and establishing Acre America Corporation in the US. This phase considered to be critical in the life of Acre, it went global, big losses were made, and the company was restructured more than three mimes. To summarize, the cost of learning in this period was high. Fourth phase (2001- Present), which represents the changing from manufacturing company to a service company, in another words, the company outsourcer manufacturing, and the main activities became sales, marketing, and after sales services , which is similar to NIKKEI business model (The Wall Street, 2007). See figure 6. 4 Entry Modes (Question 3) TCL Entry Modes TCL had two types of foreign direct investments; Joint venture and acquisition. They had Jobs with Taiwan C.V. base, Thomson (French company), and Locate (French many). However, the acquisitions were by acquiring Schneider Electronics GAG in Germany, Thomson shares in the JP, and Locate shares in the JP as well. Recently, they made some agreements and cooperation with Samsung (outsourcing agreement) (Marie Han, 2008), KEA (Anna Rainstorm, 2011) and Carefree (Sandra Bell, 2010). See figure 1. The Joint venture with Thomson was remarkable in terms of amount, nature and outcome. Both companies put together ?450 million (cash and assets), where TCL and Thomson shares were 67% and 33% respectively (TCL Annual 20,000 sales outlets. On the other hand, Thomson brought to the deal its factories in Poland, Thailand, and Mexico (Elaine Quarterback, 2009). The JP was not profitable and carried out losses for both companies. As a result, both companies came to an agreement, and TCL bought Thomson shares in the JP. Furthermore, the acquisition included Thomson TV plants in Mexico, Thailand and Poland, RD centers in USA, Germany and Singapore, and worldwide sales networks (Sandra Bell, 2010). Acre Entry Modes Acre had three types of foreign direct investments; green field, Joint venture and acquisition. The green field investments were mainly to establish regional operation units (in Europe, USA, Asia, etc ) which have sub-branches in many countries. The main functions for these units to sell, market and provide after sale services (Ping Lie Peter, 1998). The company also did some Jobs such as a JP with Texas Instruments to form TTL-Acre DRAM, as well as a JP with Computed to form Acre Computed Latin America (UCLA) (Ping Lie Peter, 1998). See figure 1 . Acres acquisition goals were mainly to achieve multi-brand strategy. The company acquired Gateway, machines, Packard Bell, E-ten and agree. These acquisitions enhanced Acres global presence, and made it able to target different customer segments (Acre Overview, 2013). 5 Factors for Investing Abroad (Question 4) TCL Factors for investing abroad In general, there are many factors that led Chinese companies to seek global market. For TCL there were 5 main factors: In 2000, competition inside the PRE electronics market was aggressive which led to a price war and industry margin was shrinking (Sandra Bell, 2010). In 2001, China became a WTFO member which helped a lot of Chinese companies to partner with companies from developed countries, as TCL had any agreements and Jobs. Lie Donnishness, CEO of the company, was thinking about going global since the Asian crisis in the late sasss, taking advantage of the Chinese stable economy to build a brand which was the company competitive advantage in his vision. The company also did some international investments to overcome trade barriers, such as the anti-dumping European policy (The Financial Times Limited, 2003). The company also overestimated its power to turnaround a loss company, which was a main drive for some acquisitions such as acquiring Schneider Electronics GAG in Germany (Sandra Bell, 2010). Acquiring Schneider Electronics GAG in Germany is a clear example for the last two factors. Acre Factors for investing abroad For Acre the main reason for expanding is that the market size at that time, early sasss, was small. They targeted small neighboring countries, however, as Shih stated the combination of many small markets is not small, also there was a potential since those small markets were becoming bigger. The following are some reasons for investing abroad and expanding operations to reach more regions: The industry became mature rapidly which led to an aggressive competition, price war, and giggling of the margin. As a result, all companies in the industry started to expand to less competitive regions (Acre Inc. History, 2008). The Taiwanese dollar became stronger, which made difficult to the company to make profit since its product became more expensive abroad (Acre Inc. History, 2008). Major Operational TCL Operational Difficulties It seems that all international investments made by TCL were unsuccessful and turned huge losses. This was due by many issues on the managerial and operational level, which will be discussed in the following paragraph. The main problem for TCL s that they underestimate the difficulties of managing global operation, and they also overestimate their ability to turn around a loss company, which represents a broader dilemma for Chinese companies Justine Ala, 2006). As Vincent Yang, SCOFF of ATE and TCL stated in the past three months of operations, we found out the challenges and difficulties are deeper than we thought. (Even Armadas, 2004). Furthermore, the desperate to go global and use acquisitions as a shortcut without evaluating partners and investments were a main drive for those wrongful investments, for instants, Schneider Electronics GAG, Thomson and Locate were cording losses, moreover, Schneider Electronics GAG were viewed as an old fashion brand in Europe (Sandra Bell, 2010). Moreover, TCL was slow to react to the market changes Justine Ala, 2006) lack of market know-how, lack of transparency, and lack to culture adaptation when they changed the German manager of Schneider Electronics GAG with a Chinese noel (Sandra Bell, 2010). TCL has no brand positioning issues since it managed this aspect in a very professional way, for instants, they were able to position the brand TCL to a high end clientele very successfully by sponsoring Golf ornaments three years in a row in China(Sandra Bell, 2010) , which represent the target market. The company also has many brand names such as TCL, ROW, and RCA, as well as some agreements to use others brand names such as Thomson and Locate, which serve different customer segments. Acre Operational Difficulties Acre started with 13 employees including Shih and his wife, and in ten years that number grew to reach 1000, and continued to grow. This fast growing led to create a big gap between available capabilities and capabilities needed, further, it also led to a shortage in qualified managers. As a result, Acre started to recruit many top-level and mid-level managers, where some were not qualified enough, such as Leonard Lie, former senior IBM executive who led the company to a disastrous situations. Another problem caused by the fast growing is that the company was restructured more than three times which led to more failed operations (The Wall Street, 2007). Chris Foster, an analyst at Technology Business Research in Hampton, stated The bottom line is Acre has a more volatile business model than HP or Dell (The Wall Street, 2007). Other difficulties such as changing the company name from Multitude o Acre after more than 10 years of building brand name (The Wall Street, 2007), aggressive competition which reduced the profit margin, and the shortening product life cycle, among other factors which led to more operational and managerial difficulties. However, the company in many scenarios managed those obstacles very well. The following are examples for successful managerial strategies and operations. Dependent innovation which made Acre beat IBM and offer 32-bit PC first. Employee ownership, delegated accountability, and management frugality helped in the fast growing. Overcoming the shortening of the product life cycle by developing a strategy transit. They also developed the 2-3-1 System. Two months for product introduction, three months for selling, and one month for phase-out (Ping Lie Peter, 1998). Multi- brand strategy which helped the company to target different customer segments, therefore, the company does not have any brand or positioning issues (Acre Brands, 2013). 7 Comparison Conclusion Both companies have a lot in common. Both of them started to invest in neighboring countries and later on expanded to other parts of the world. They also depend a lot n acquisitions and Jobs to penetrate international markets, which reflects their weaknesses to build an international brand and have a successful international operations. Last but not least, both of them have a worldwide presence and mainly targeted developed countries. See figure 6. It seems that Macs from emerging markets recognize brand/country image as primary problem; as a result they have used strategies to overcome this obstacle such as multi-brand strategy and global brand strategy.

What to Do Before Leaving for College
What to Do Before Leaving for College Overwhelmed with everything you need to do before heading to college? Familiarizing yourself with everything on this list can help make the process easier. 1. Contact Your Roommate That first conversation is pivotal for getting to know each other, for building your relationship as roommates, and for figuring out whos going to be bringing what. A great roommate can make all the difference in school. 2. Organize All Your Purchases Knowing what to bring is just as important as knowing what not to bring. Deciding on what kind of computer youll have is also a big decision that will influence several aspects of your college life. (Can you bring it home? Is it powerful enough to run graphics programs or economic models youll need for your major?) 3. Understand Your Financial Aid The last thing you want to have happen is for finances to get in the way of your academic progress (yes, it really does matter if you miss that deadline for submitting your FAFSA). Make sure your finances are in order- and that you understand all you need to do while youre in school. 4. Make a Budget Youll need to know, from your first day on campus, how much money you can spend on certain things, whether or not youll need an on-campus job, and how much money you should have at the end of every month so you dont have to beg your roommate for food come December. 5. Take Care of Your Physical Health Picking the right meal plan and knowing how to make healthy choices in your new environment will greatly aid your time in school. Who wants to miss a midterm because of a stress-induced cold? 6. Familiarize Yourself With College Terminology If your RA tells you that the problem youre having with your TA can best be handled by the dean, will you know what all of that means? What if your cute lab partner is complaining because adjunct professors werent invited to convocation? College life is full of acronyms and new lingo: do what you can to familiarize yourself with it before you arrive. 7. Get the Most out of Orientation Everything from meeting people to making it through your first week takes a lot of courage- but pushing yourself through will make a huge difference during your entire time at school. 8. Plan to Keep in Touch With Friends and Family Its a good idea to know how to manage relationships with your boyfriend or girlfriend, parents, and even siblings. If you talk about how to keep in touch before you leave, everyone will know what to expect. 9. Develop a Time Management System Figuring out how to manage their time is often one of the biggest challenges for college students. Set yourself up early with a system that you know will work for you. 10. Keep Yourself and Your Stuff Safe The last thing you need to be worried about while in school is dealing with something that may have been preventable. Losing your computer, for example, can wreak havoc on your academics- and, if someone breaks into your room while you left the door open, can wreak havoc on your roommate relationship. Its easier to stay safe than to deal with theft. Lastly- an unofficial #11- congratulate yourself on a job well done for getting here in the first place, and have fun!
